Where History Continues to be Written

The Library at Historic Huguenot Street is named for the Schoonmaker family, one of the earliest Dutch families in what is now New York's Mid-Hudson Valley and a family with long ties to the Huguenot founders of New Paltz.  The Library is a research facility devoted primarily to the history and genealogy of the settlers of the Hudson Valley — people from the low countries of Europe including French-speaking and Dutch families.  It also functions as a general repository for local history, regardless of ethnicity for religious persuasion. Our collections consist of family genealogies, church, cemetery and bible records, wills and deeds, census records, genealogical periodicals, county histories and publications relating to Huguenot, Walloon and Dutch ancestry. The Library is housed in the Roosa House at 88 Huguenot Street.

Research Queries and Requests
Staff and volunteers in the Library are available to respond to queries.  Generally, we can allot up to one hour per query.  The charge for this service is $25 for Friends of Huguenot Street and $35 for non-members.  Queries are answered in the order they are received. Please let us know if your request is time-sensitive.

Answers to queries will typically include citations for all sources searched whether or not the information was found. Photocopies made as part of the response are billed at 25 cents per copy and postage may also be billed if the response is mailed.

Given our resources, we are unable to conduct research for specific inquiries beyond the initial reference search. Similarly, we cannot complete applications to organizations where genealogical proof is a necessary prerequisite for membership. When possible, the library will provide a list of professional genealogists who can be contracted to conduct such research.
